Starfields

In this Tutorial we will produce a nice starfield effect using tools availible within the GIMP

New Image First create a new image from the file menu in the tool window of GIMP this can be any size you wish, i used 250*250 pixels for this.

Render Plasma next render plasma by right clicking on the image and selecting Filter => Render => Clouds => Plasma and use a turbulence level of about 3.5 this will vary depending on the desired star size.

Desaturate then, from the right click menu, select image => colours => desaturate this will remove colours from the image

Select By Colour

once you have a grey-scale version of the plasma right click on the image to bring up the menu and click
Select => By Colour
Now select a Fuziness theshold of 0 and click on the image to make a selection, the selected area will be shown in the select by colour window, if you hold down shift while clicking on different parts of the image you can built up a denser selection, you can do similar by playing with the selection mode settings.

Finished Starfield

once you have the selection you want click close, now use
<Image> - Selection - Invert
(image is the right click menu) then set the foreground colour to black and do
<image> - Edit - Fill with FG colour.

your finished result should look something like this.

Starfield Put to use and here's one i made earlier, with a little planet and nearby star.
